Summary: Tens of thousands descended on Epsom for the derby day, which was gleefully attended by people from all classes and corners of the country, and this film gloriously captures the spectacle’s revelry. The derby, won by Sansovino, represented a rare win for Lord Derby - whose family the event was named after - netting him the first prize of £11,755 (close to £2million today).

While the race itself appears to be Sansovino's Derby, the winner walking into the winner's enclosure is not Sansovino. He was a dark bay or brown horse and the jockey's silks were completely black with a white cap. The horse in the winner's enclosure is a chestnut with a large blaze, and the jockey's silks are a light color with a horizontal stripe. This matches the description of Captain Cuttle, who won the Derby in 1922.
