Water-Ski Championships
First story of the newsreel features a water-ski championship, the opening scenes illustrates boats and swimmers. A competitor wears a 'Ruislip W.B.C' lifejacket. Other competitors from Italy and Australia prepare for the competition, with a close-up of a ski board with an Australian flag on it. The boat prepares and the Australian competitor water-skis on the lake weaving in between buoys before releasing the rope. The next competitor is the man from Ruislip with the boat pulling him from the jetty, he too weaves through the buoys with a lot of skill and punches the air when he lands. Another competitor takes his turn and jumps spectacularly of a jetty in the lake before landing safely. The last scene are children playing on the beach.
A new wing for Mount Vernon
The next story in the newsreel covers Mount Vernon hospital, with an opening shot of the hospital on a bright and sunny day, the nurses smiling and other medical staff smiling as they await their special guest. A Rolls-Royce car pulls up with the Royal Standard on its roof. A brass band begins to play and children wave Union Flags. The Duchess of Gloucester, along with a matron inspects a line of nurses who look pristine in their uniforms. There is a close-up of the plaque which reads 'Mount Vernon Hospital Her Royal Highness The Duchess if Gloucester opened this department on 28th May 1968.' Children wave flags at the hospital and the Duchess is escorted to the building in front of all the staff. There are the new modern operating theatres, very clean and yet to be used. Back outside, the nurses are seen chatting, there is an empty patient waiting area in sixties style decorations, along with a hospital room, again yet to be used. After the brief tour of the new hospital wing, the Duchess returns to her car, looking on at the enthusiastic children waving flags.
Remember Remember
The third news item covers Bonfire Night 1968, with crowds witnessing fireworks and bonfires on a cold night. There are plenty of fireworks displays and bonfires, with the fireworks carefully positioned away from the fire itself. Two of the fireworks on display are the 'cake' and 'catherine-wheel', both very colourful. The crowds look up in wonder and there are various different catherine-wheels, along with the more traditional fireworks that are released into the sky.
Wembley Wassail Trophy
The fourth item on the newsreel concerns Wembley Sailing Club's Wassail trophy. A blackboard explains that the weather is cold and the boat yard is covered in a light flurry of snow. Several competitors prepare their boats for the competition in the bitter cold. One man launches his boat into the lake and other boats are bobbing gently on the water. The next scene features all the sailing boats in the water, obviously racing each other. A small group of people look on, and the feature ends with a row of boats being moored up against the jetty.
Ye Ancient Charity Barrows
The fifth news item covers stylish men and women in iconic sixites style fashion next to sports cars parked at 'The Bell' pub. There are a line of wheel barrows close to the cars and a woman walks around with a money boxes asking for donations. Police inspect the commotion and gathering of so many people. A couple of men enjoy a drink before there is a wheel barrow race with the majority of the men taking part, racing down a busy road (which hasn't been closed for the occasion), with a London Red Bus amongst the vehicles caught up in the race. The wheel barrow race continues with the participants weaving through the traffic, with men pushing their male friends in the wheel barrows. The last scenes illustrates the winner of the race, holding a plaque to highlight his win.
Harefield Hospital Fete
The final news item features Harefield Hospital fete, a brass band plays on quite an over-cast day, and a group of girls put on a dance display in the field, using handkerchiefs as props. A young girl enjoys a game of bowls and children tuck into ice-creams. There is an interesting section where a group of men are seen cutting down a long line of pianos and placing the wood in a skip. A man enjoys a can of beer and children look on as a tug of war commences. The last man on the end of the rope works hard to ensure his side win, but the other team win and he lets go, exhausted.
