Description: This exciting amateur film shows highlights of a works football match between a team from Hugh Stevenson & Sons against rivals from Upper Tooting. Filmed from the sidelines by hand we are right in the action from the opening coin toss - although these first few sequences are running slowly, the film maker soon adjusts the settings and gets up to the correct film speed. The pitch deteriorates as the match goes on - turning very muddy, though this certainly helps with the sliding tackles. We see some wonderfully athletic saves filmed from behind the goal posts before we are treated to a slow motion penalty shot that whizzes right past the keeper. Next we have the first of the two team shots of all eleven players and presumably the manager. More action follows including a shot bouncing off the crossbar as the defending players scramble to clear the ball away. the next goal is a header scored from a corner kick. We see the same team as before gather in for another group shot - presumably these are the team from Hugh Stevenson & sons playing in the lighter kit.
Further information: Summerstown, now largely lost to modern maps, is the area around Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium. Next to the Wandle, it attracted a lot of light industry such as Hugh Stevenson’s cardboard box factory. This was amalgamated with Bowater in 1971 and the site was occupied by several small commercial firms and has now been sold for housing.
