ProRes digital file Black & White Mute 1921 0:50
Summary: Pancake competition at Westminster
Title number: 19935
LSA ID: LSA/26378
Description: There’s lovely footage of the school grounds in central London as a stern procession of masters meets J A Pickering, the winner of the 1921 pancake contest at Westminster School. Watched by staff, chef and peers, the chuffed looking schoolboy wolfs down the prize he claimed after the annual “Greaze”, held since 1753 and involving a one-minute fight in the school hall over a horsehair-reinforced pancake. Sadly, there’s no record of the fight in question.

Further information: The ancient annual Pancake Greaze on Shrove Tuesday is included on the site because it’s well-known and has an interesting history dating back to at least the eighteenth century. It’s a competition between the pupils to see who can claim the largest portion of an enormous pancake tossed over the Greaze Bar in the school hall (a metal bar about 15 feet up across the hall). The school chef tosses the pancake, representatives from each House end up in a pile on the floor and the winner receives a sovereign in return for his portion. Following the Greaze, the Head always requests the Dean to grant a holiday for the rest of the day. (http://calendarcustoms.com/articles/westminster-school-pancake-greaze/)
