Title number: 19805
LSA ID: LSA/26248
Description: This film illustrates a light-hearted and fun scene, progressive for its time. It begins with four young girls arriving at the pools on a motorbike and sidecar wearing swimsuits and jackets. We see dozens of people swimming, diving, playing with inflatables, and chatting in a busy outdoor pool. Plenty of people are casually lounging by the poolside, enjoying the heat and sun. Everyone is in one-piece full-body swimsuits, with women wearing swimming caps (no men seem to wear them), offering insight into the swimwear fashion and advancements of the 1920s.
Further information: Chiswick Baths were inaugurated in 1910 on Edensor Road in an attempt to promote work for the unemployed.
During the 1920s there was a shift from people mainly bathing in the water, to spending time lounging and bathing in the sun. Another advance was the incorporation of swimming caps as part of swimwear attire for women, both for fashion and practical purposes.
