Topical Budget: Hero Of Transatlantic Flight, Croydon (1927)
ProRes digital file Black & White Mute 1927 2:09
Summary: The public pay tribute to Captain Charles Lindbergh as he lands at Croydon Aerodrome, returning from his transatlantic flight NY-Paris
Title number: 19793
LSA ID: LSA/26236
Description: In May 1927, Charles Lindbergh flew solo non-stop from New York to Paris in his custom-built plane, Spirit Of St Louis. This caused a sensation, as can be seen by the crowds awaiting his arrival days later in London. Thousands assembled to see Lindbergh, and the film captures the joyful, anarchic spirit. Note the sole policeman, forlornly trying to stop onrushing crowds from mobbing the pilot, and the three lads on the roof of the pavilion, clapping loud approval as he passes.
Cast: Captain Charles Lindbergh
Further information: Croydon Airport is now a housing estate. The terminal building and the traffic control tower are still standing, and in the middle of the housing estate they’ve kept a stretch of tarmac which was one of the runways. There’s a Croydon Airport Visitor Centre at the site (http://www.croydonairport.org.uk/The-Airport).
