Title number: 19783
LSA ID: LSA/26226
Description: Further evidence of the huge enthusiasm for all things aerial in 1920s London, as this film shows hundreds of spectators mobbing Flight-Lieutenant Webster back to Croydon Airport after winning the Schneider Trophy (the correct name for the competion) in Venice. This was a contest for seaplanes, in this case won by Sidney Webster in his Supermarine S.5 single-engine seaplane, flying at an average speed of 280mph around a triangular course of around 200 miles. The trophy is now in the Science Museum
Further information: Topical Budget (1911-1931) was one of three major British newsreels of the silent era, its main rivals being Gaumont Graphic and Pathé Gazette. Produced by William Jeapes' Topical Film Company, its first issue was released in September 1911. Of several newsreels on the market in this early period, by the middle of the First World War only three survived: Topical, Pathé and Gaumont.
