Description: Workers from a Wimbledon cardboard box factory – Hugh Stevenson’s in Summerstown – gather at a sports ground for a very good-natured and alcohol-fuelled sports day. After copious drinking, the workers compete in numerous sports, and take some spectacular falls in the sack race particularly. Also shows shots of the factory and lots of footage of the workers’ families at the event, including children and well-dressed wives.
Further information: Summerstown, now largely lost to modern maps, is the area around Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium. Next to the Wandle, it attracted a lot of light industry such as Hugh Stevenson’s cardboard box factory. This was amalgamated with Bowater in 1971 and the site was occupied by several small commercial firms and has now been sold for housing.
