Description: A delightful film showing three birthday parties for Alan, David and Glynis in 1957 and their celebrations.
Alan Lawford is in a red Indian fancy dress, stands by an elaborate two tier birthday cake-at the top is flag with a sign 'Happy Birthday Alan' . A number of smartly dressed boys and girls are sitting at the birthday celebration table tucking into the party food, and Glynis is seen talking to a boy in a red jumper at the table. Alan is now dressed in a jumper and bow tie and is enjoying a sausage on a stick. Alan is carefully lighting the candles on the cake, helped by his mother in a very smart green dress. After several attempts he blows out the candles and the top layer is removed to reveal a cake with several figures on top, his mother helps him cut the cake while the children wait expectantly! They can then be seen enjoying the fruit cake.
In a garden we see our fancy dress red Indian birthday boy playing with his bow and arrow. David, his older brother dressed in a bow tie appears to have a set of fangs, and poses for the camera. Glynis is in a red dress and pony tail, successfully uses the bow and arrow, although seems disappointed by her performance. A young girl enjoys an apple and poses for the camera, and walks down the garden path with Alan and then David.
Alan, Glynis and David with the young girl are seen arm-in-arm walking up and down the garden path. A woman plays with the bow and arrow and poses, balancing on one leg, and laughs. She then turns towards the camera and fires the arrow unsuccessfully!
Alan and David have a boxing match in the garden, each only has one glove. They spar around the garden!
The children now play with a pop gun, and each other. Alan dances in the middle of the garden, Glynis has the bow and arrow and is carefully considering her next victim.
Glynis's 10th birthday! Glynis is giggling and in front of her is a beautifully decorated cake with pink and blue icing. Sandwiches are handed around the group of children, the girls are dressed in party dresses with matching headbands, a 1950s fireplace and hearth are seen in the background with framed baby photos and a clock sitting on top. The party is in the family home in Bedford Road, West Harrow.
Plates of sandwiches are handed around but the cake is still not cut! Glynis's mother and a friend are seen in the kitchen preparing more food, both are smartly dressed. The woman in a white blouse smiles and poses with a cup and saucer. Mr Lawford returns from work and enters through the back door carrying a jacket and cigarette.
Glynis's mother carefully lights the birthday cake while the birthday girl looks intently on, she hold her breath and successfully blows out the candles in two attempts! Her mum carefully helps her cut the cake.
A young girl with red hair and a pink bow smiles at the camera and we can see some 10th birthday cards on the mantelpiece.
David's birthday. A fantastic birthday cake in the shape of an Ocean Liner, it has three funnels and cotton wool in the shape of smoke coming out of the middle funnel, a flag at the bow states 'Happy Birthday David'. A number of children are waving crackers at the camera and we see a table full of cakes before the children! A number of adults are seen in the background and they hand out plates of sandwiches to the children, who appear very happy to be eating them.
Crackers are pulled, squash is drunk through straws, (a young boy impressively drinks through three paper straws) and party hats are worn by all!
David is before the lit cake, as everyone sings happy birthday, and he blows out the candles. Mum helps him to carefully cut the cake.
A man and a woman smile at the camera, and we have a final view of Gynis with her friend.
