Old Car
Standard 8mm film Black & White Mute c1959 8:56
Summary: Slapstick short as a customer finds himself taken for a ride when he splashes out on an old banger in south-east London.
Title number: 19606
LSA ID: LSA/25993
Description: Part of the Ashlee Family Films and – judging by a passing bus – shot on Victor Ashlee’s home turf of Bexley, this slapstick film features a man’s trials after he spends £2 on a second-hand car. Lots of mugging but some good jokes, and also wonderful incidental moments such as a scene at a petrol station, where a lab-coated attendant fills up with Cleveland Benzole Mixture. It also demonstrates a contempt for British car industry that predates Fawlty Towers by several years.
Credits: Victor A Ashlee; filmmaker
