Description: This footage documents the visit of HRH Prince George (from 1934 the Duke of Kent) to Southgate on Saturday September 30th 1933, granting the new borough with a charter of incorporation. Opening shot is of the crowds gathered around as the car carrying Prince George and the new Mayor of Southgate (John Thomas Barber) drives past. The mayor and alderman exit the car; they wear large bircorne hats and decorated cloaks. A judge wears a wig and cloak. A policeman with a helmet is present. Bunting and Union Jacks hang from the houses behind the crowd. Prince George is now seen next to a man in a three-piece suit. Prince George shakes hands with the mayor and other officials; a mounted policeman rides past. A uniformed man conducts a military band in the park, with a children's playground in the background. Men congregate to await the prince, wearing suits, bowler hats and top hats. The crowd behind is largely women and children; the women all wear hats and everyone is smartly dressed. Prince George is introduced to a scout master and walks past a row of boy scouts accompanied by the mayor, and the alderman who wields a large ceremonial mace. They walk past the playground and marching band. A group of smartly-dressed dignitaries walk past the camera. One woman wears a long dress with fur stole and cloche hat; two others wear coats with large fur collars. Another wears a cloche hat with a smart dress suit. Prince George helps to dig a hole, into which a tree is placed, and the mayor shovels dirt back into the hole to plant the tree. The dignitaries get back into their cars and are driven to the Town Hall; they exit their cars then re-enter. More cars pull away.
We then cut to a large group of women gymnasts dancing in formation in Broomfield Park watched by a large crowd. Six young girls then dance in a circle. We see Victorian houses in the background at the edge of the park. One girl gives some sort of performance, seems to be dresses as a milkmaid, watching by the crowd. The camera then shows up a row of children looking into the camera; the boys wear suits with shorts and the girls wear cloche hats and coats, or dresses.
