9. Fete & Gala
16mm film Colour Mute 1959 3:39
Summary: Sports Club Fete and Gala Day for the Cables Telephone Company workers and their families
Title number: 19462
LSA ID: LSA/25844
Description: Opening titles made in stop motion read "filmed by SUTC film unit" with a cartoon cameraman. The next title reads "forthcoming attraction," then "Dagenham Cables Sports Club Fete and Gala Day." A car from around the early 1910s (but clearly well-maintained) with license plate Y 754 is driven onto the sports field by two men. We then see many families with children, including a young girl dressed up as a telephone, two young girls dressed as flappers, and another dressed as a Christmas tree. Many of the women wear cardigans and floral dresses with slingback heels. A woman with a hat and gloves and a patterned grey dress-suit gives prizes to the children. More children take part in a race, then in an egg-and-spoon race; another child rides a donkey and two play on a see-saw. More children enjoy a large merry-go-round and swings. A girl guide watches younger children play on a slide. The girls mostly wear loose skirts and cardigans with socks and Mary-Jane shoes; the boys wear colourful polo shirts or sweater-vests over short-sleeved shirts with shorts.
Further information: This piece of film is the title sequence for film No.6 in collection - Filmed by SUTC Film Unit - so the two films have been merged.
