Shows how a young person who was born deaf copes with her condition and adjusts to her surroundings. Encourages discussion of feelings and attitudes toward people who have hearing and speech impairments. Mary is an active eleven-year-old who attends public school in Massachusetts. Mary was born deaf. A hearing aid enables her to hear some sounds and she has learned to read lips, but she is still learning how to speak. She attends a language class for children with hearing impairments and works individually with a speech therapist. Scenes with her brother and sister show that Mary's condition can sometimes be as frustrating to her family as it is to her. This is Mary's first year on the basketball team, and she has definite personal goals in mind: "I want other kids to learn that deaf children are noth that different, are nothing to be afraid of, are just like everybody else".
