Summary: This silent film looks at ectopia cordis, a congenital condition of the heart in which the heart lies outside the thorax in either cervical, abdominal or pectoral positions. The main subject is a baby born with a pectoral heart and no sternum. The baby is shown during the 28 hours it survived and blood chemistry, x-rays and diagrams of its body are studied. After the baby's death, post mortem footage is shown in detail. We also see the baby's undeveloped twin which is also examined by x-ray and under post-mortem. 2 segments.

Description: Segment 1 Intertitle describes what ectopia cordis is and the three forms: cervical, abdominal and pectoral. The cervical, abdominal and pectoral positions of the heart are illustrated by simple animated diagrams. The pectoral position is also shown in a baby who is seen with his heart lying on his chest with a complete absence of sternum. He lived only 28 hours. Details of his blood chemistry are shown. Still photographs are shown of the baby and the most affected areas of his body pointed out by arrows. We see an electrocardiograph tracing from 8 hours prior to the baby's death and abnormalities in heart rhythm are pointed out. An x-ray showing the baby's heart, the absence of its sternum, its high diaphragm and a gas bubble in its stomach are shown. Time start: 00:00:00:00 Time end: 00:05:16:09 Length: 00:05:16:09 Segment 2 The baby is shown crying when he is disturbed. The intertitle tells us how the mother was healthy and had healthy twins in the past. This baby had a twin who didn't develop properly a 'monstrosity'. We are shown the 'monstrosity' with its very partially formed leg, arm and hair. We also see it in an x-ray photograph. Detailed post-mortem footage of the baby who briefly survived is shown and aspects of its physiology pointed out. Detailed post-mortem footage is also shown of the undeveloped twin. Intertitles tell us that most children born with this kind of condition do not survive and we see footage repeated from earlier of the baby who briefly survived as he struggles to breathe. Time start: 00:05:16:09 Time end: 00:10:15:24 Length: 00:04:59:15
