Description: Description: This programme looks at the role and function of merchants, guilds and companies over centuries of London history. To illustrate, old prints are shown of different Company Halls including Grocer's, Fishmonger's and Draper's. In particular, the Fishmonger's Company is closely looked at - including their involvement in the death of Watt Tyler. River traditions such as the Doggett's race are shown via a short film, documenting the traditional boat race between Chelsea and London Bridge. To talk more about this, his role as Barge Master and watermen in general, Mr Harry Phelps is in the studio. The impact of the Industrial Revolution and Victorian puritanism are both subjects touched on when again discussion of the history of city companies is picked up. In addition to, the charitable work each one is involved in, including photographs that show schools developed by the companies such as Oundle and Dame Alice Owen's. To end the programme, the role of the Lord Mayor, how he gets elected and what is role is, are both explored. Colour/B&W: Black and White.
