Riding for Real
16mm film Colour Sound c.1981 31:34
Summary: A compilation of three road safety films sponsored by Gulf Oil aimed at their younger motorcycle-riding customers.
Title number: 173
LSA ID: LSA/228
Description: The films consist of a series of still images accompanied by library music and commentary, and present stories illustrating good and poor practice when riding a motorbike or moped. The first film mentions a rise in motorcycle use, especially amongst the young, due to unemployment, inflation and high-energy costs. Some text presents accident and mortality statistics for the years 1978 through 1980 and several of the scenes feature accidents happening. All of the images appear to have been photographed in the city of Cheltenham and around the Cotswolds area of Gloucestershire.
Credits: Sponsor: Gulf Oil
Further information: An older motorcyclist named 'Pete' appears in the second two of the three films and may be motorcycle racer Peter Williams who wrote Gulf Oil's road safety book 'Riding for Real', which appears in the last film. Amongst the library music is an instrumental cover version of 'Pinball Wizard' by The Who.
