Description: Description: This programme opens with a short clip from the 1944 film 'Champagne Charlie', set in a fictional music hall during the 1860's. To introduce the subject, a brief history of Victorian music halls is provided supported by a variety of cuttings from contemporary news articles. In particular, a range of music hall owners are mentioned including Charles Morton (Cantebury Hall, Lambeth), Sam Collins (Irish entertainer/Sam Collins Music Hall) and John Milton (John Milton Music Hall). Of the music halls that survived, which were few by the 1970s, the presenter visits John Milton Music Hall on Wellclose Square. A close look at its many architectural and decorative features are shown. This is followed with another short extract from 'Champagne Charlie'. To find out more about the actors that played at these music halls a series of contemporary programmes, such as The Oxford, are referenced. Such is the detail of these programmes, that customers have even taken the time to annotate whether an act has performed that night or not. To end the programme, the work of Edward Villiers when he took on Cantebury Hall and the changes he made are detailed. This provides a good insight into nightlife at these establishments, and what a customer could expect. Colour/B&W: Black and White
