Description: Description: This programme opens with a reading from Chaucer's work by the presenter, dressed in period costume. Following a brief introduction, reference is made to the development of English language since the Medieaval period and how Chaucer's original work is easy for the modern reader. With the use of illustrations from old manuscripts and extracts from Cantebury Tales, the life of Chaucer is detailed. Included within the biography is a short piece of film depicting the ride of pilgrims to Cantebury. To provide a background to the work Chaucer carried out, the role of a scribe is featured. The viewer is shown how vellum was prepared, how to make a quill and how manuscripts were decorated with gold leaf and other illustrative designs. It is these designs that are focused on as sources of information on Medieaval social, agricultural and Royal history. To end, an introduction to printing and its history is detailed, including a filmed visit to a London-based printing museum. Colour/B&W: Black and White
