Description: Description: This programme looks at the markets of Leadenhall, Spitalfields and Billingsgate. Each are introduced with a brief history and supported with a variety of old prints and photographs - some of which date back to the 16th century. At Leadenhall, the programme's host outlines the type of produce available and also discusses the layout of this historic market. At Spitalfields, experienced market worker Ian Robbins talks of the variety of fruit and vegetable on offer, the majority of which is imported from all over the world. He further discusses how the advancements in storage on aircraft and the increase in travel abroad by customers has prompted an increase in exotic fruits. One stall in particular, owned by A. Lackmaker, is used by the host to talk in more detail about the health benefits of eating fruit and vegetable. At Billingsgate, we are introduced to the impact of the River Thames on market produce and how important it has been over centuries of trade in London. Two workers, Mr Gibbit and C. Newnes, are interviewed and in particular discuss the variety of produce on offer, emphasising the global impact on stock. Colour/B&W: Black and White. Key Subjects: Leadenhall Market, Spitalfields Market and Billingsgate Market
