Description: Description: The programme opens with a short pantomime about Dick Whittington, his fictional journey to London and the story surrounding his accension to the office of Lord Mayor. Following on from this, the true story of Richard Whittington is described with original prints and portraits. A look at the different robes worn by livery members and documents showing the benevolence of Whittington are both explored. The expansion of London since the time of Whittington is detailed with a map charting the boundaries of the City of London and showing the boroughs of Greater London. Film footage of commuters on London Bridge, scenes by Bank station and shots of Mansion House, the Royal Exchange and Bank of England are shown. In the studio, the Lord Mayor's robe is on loan and is looked at in closer detail by the presenters. The role of the Lord Mayor and the men that accompany him, including the City Marshall and Sargeant at Arms, is discussed. To end, film footage of a Court session with aldermen and the Lord Mayor's procession is shown. In addition, a look at earlier Victorian processions using old prints. Colour/B&W: Black and White.
