Description: Title: Switzerland in Britian. Issue Date: 06/01/1966. Pathe Synopsis - Switzerland, the land where you climb mountains and ski. But you don't have to go there any more, to do these things. At Eridge, in Sussex, there's a mountain-climbing school where you can learn to flex the right muscles and tackle any climb from the childishly simple to the almost impossible. You might be in Switzerland there, except that you can't go skiing. You do that in London at the new ski-slope in the Crystal Palace Park - on nylon bristle. Yes, you've got Switzerland, as we vividly show you, here at home. According to this story recent sporting trends seem to have been strongly influenced by the Swiss! Long Shot of snow capped mountains, a cable car passes in the foreground. Panning shot of mountains. Medium shot of a man rock climbing. Various Close ups of the man finding hand and foot holes in the rock face. Medium shots of a line of young men beside a swimming pool. Dressed in shirt sleeves, an instructor leads them in a series of exercises. Various shots of the men exercising on the parallel bars, hoops and trapeze watched by an instructor. Long Shots of sandstone cliffs in rolling countryside, men can be made out scaling the rock face. Close ups of a hand reaching for a grip in a fake rock face. Medium Shots of two men practising climbing on fake rock face built on a metal frame, an instructor shouts instructions from the ground. Various shots of a man abseiling down the climbing wall - with no safety harness! Various shots of an instructor in an army beret teaching a group of young men in front of a real rock face. The instructor helps one of the men climb along a low ridge. Various shots of the men and women climbing a rock face, some of the men remain on the ground letting out slack rope. Close ups of the various climbers - all from different walks of life - a school pupil, a police woman cadet. Various Close ups of walking boots and hands finding foot holes in the rock face. Various shots of a man abseiling down the rock face. More shots of young men scaling the cliffs. As one boy lands, an instructor comes over and explains his faults. The instructor then ties the rope around his waist, various shots of the instructor climbing a very difficult rock face. London: Medium Shots of a man sawing a branch off a tree, tilt down to show a dry ski slope being built. Various shots of 'nylon bristle mats' being laid in the Crystal Palace Park. Medium Shots of a man coming out of a caravan carrying a pair of skis, he passes several people fixing skis to their boots. Teresa Dredge, ski champion, gives instructions on the slope to a couple of novices. Various shots of learner skiers side stepping up the slope. Various shots of the skiers coming down the slope, some practice jumping. From British Pathe website: www.britishpathe.com
