Description: Description: This programme looks at the development, construction and influence of the Thames Tunnel by Sir Marc Isambard Brunel during the early 19th century. Inspired by how a sea worm bores through wood on piers, ships and docks, the viewer is shown how Sir Marc Isambard Brunel invented a new technique for tunneling. Using reenactments, early meetings with patrons, the technicalities behind constructing the tunnel, problems caused by flooding, the grand opening and its future influence on engineering are all portrayed supported by contemporary engravings and prints. Of particular interest is that once the tunnel was opened, it soon became populated with fairs, novelties and other entertainment, all for its visitors. Colour/B&W: Black and White. Key Subjects: tunneling shield, Sir Marc Isambard Brunel, Thames Tunnel, Wapping, Rotherhithe
