Description: Description: This programme opens in Highbury & Islington Underground Station with an interview on why London has such a vast underground transport system. Touched on within the interview are the different underground lines that run under London and why it was necessary to build the Victoria Line. Original footage of engineers using specialist machinery to bore tunnels is shown, with an explanation of how tunnels are lined and decorated once created. As an extension of how tunnels were made more aesthetic, the different symbols used to indicate which station passengers had arrived at, are indicated. For instance, at Euston underground station the tiled decoration incorporates the old arch that stood in front of the overground station. Footage is also shown of escalators being tested for weight and the new introduction of automatic fare gates. With a brief retrospective on Underground trains during the late 1800's, the viewer is brought back to the present with footage from Northumberland Park depot and how modern trains are constructed, furnished and tested prior to their launch. To end the programme, an Automatic Train Operator (ATO) is interviewed and asked, what is new about the Victoria line for its passengers? Colour/B&W: Black and White. Key Subjects: Victoria Line, Euston Arch, Highbury & Islington Underground Station
