Making a Splice
Standard 8mm film Black & White Silent 1965 1:52
Summary: A short instructional film on how to splice film
Title number: 1471
LSA ID: LSA/1963
Description: Opening title reads 'MAKING A SPLICE'. A bald middle-ages man with glasses, wearing a suit, sits at a desk with curtains behind him. A small splicing machine is set out in front of him with small pieces of film. We see the machine close-up as the man puts on some white gloves.
Intertitle reads: 'The emulsion must be on top'. The man lifts up both flaps on the splicer, then places some film on the left side and closes the flaps. He lifts them up, removes the film, then places it on the other side before closing them again. He lifts them up again and adds another piece of film.
Next intertitle reads 'Scrape emulsion from the overlap'. With the left flap down and the right up, he takes a small object and scrapes emulsion from the part of the film near the join. He then takes a small bottle of liquid and applies the cement to the area from which he has just removed the emulsion, before closing the right flap to seal the two pieces of film together. He closes the bottle, then takes the film out the splicer and pulls it to demonstrate the strength of the join. Closing title reads THE END.
