Summary: Wartime measures, daily life in 1943 Croydon including gas training and rationing, and the market
Title number: 1185
LSA ID: LSA/1626
Description: Introductory title reads: 'Croydon 1943/In the fourth year of war, Croydon is still a busy town with a population of quarter of a million, many factory workers on war work and a shopping centre that attracts people from miles around.' A sign for the A232 to Croydon is shown, followed by a shot of a bus stop with a spitfire flying past in the background. A double decker bus with an OXO advert on the back drives away, with two people on bikes behind. A 59 bus then pulls up to the stop and a policeman boards along with some other passengers. The bus (with an advert for Aspro Aspirin on the back) pulls away with a tram beside it. A large truck pulling a huge log passes.
Next title: 'The municipal car park, in pre-war days this would have been full of cars but now...' The large car park is then shown with only a few cars in the foreground.
Next title: '"Wings for Victory Week". Nearly 1 1/2 million pounds are subscribed by Croydonians in "National Savings" in one week.' We then see a shot of Katherine Street with Croydon Clocktower clearly in the background. A promotional vehicle for national savings drives past with hoardings encouraging people to donate. The sign says 'Do Your Bit' with a target above and the side reads 'Buy savings and smash the Hun.' A man in a cap with a large megaphone sits on top. Now at the base of the clocktower, we see a 'Your Wings for Victory Week, May 1-8' poster and a large spitfire with a Union Jack and other Allied flags above it.
Netx title: 'The Centre of the town bears few scars from bombing.' A shot of a high street (Croydon High Street?). Buses and trams drive past, policemen on the streets are very visible, and many people ride bikes. A truck has 'Claytons' written on the front. A policemen stops traffic to help a woman and children across the road. A large truck, possibly carrying aircraft parts, drives past. Two men drill at the side of the road.
Next title: 'Whatever the weather, trade is always brisk in Surrey Street Market' (Surrey Street Market survives today). Crowds of people walk around the fruit and veg stalls, which are full and busy in spite of the war. A woman with a large wicker basket sells flowers. The 68 bus drives away down the high street. Next, a tram drives towards the camera on a road that looks more suburban, lined with leafless trees. A title reads 'Croydon is well served with open spaces and parks.' A young girl wearing a coat and beret runs around the park with a dog. Two men walk down a path in the same park with another dog. A thatched-roof pavilion is seen; the gardens look very well-maintained. Next title: 'The home harden.' A woman pets a very large rabbit; the girl from before feeds it as chickens roam in the background. The woman collects eggs and shows the girl.
Next title: 'Former playing-fields are now allotments and everybody is urged to "dig for victory" air raid wardens are particularly enthusiastic diggers.' A man in air raid warden uniform digs in an allotment. 'Walk a little distance in any direction and you will find still more allotments.' Shots of suburban parts of Croydon that look almost rural. A sign reads 'dogs must be kept under control whilst on this allotment, please keep this gate locked' and another reads 'Sow, grow, victory vegetable week August.' Suburban houses, with their back gardens all turned into allotments for growing food. A man plants something and another digs. 'Nothing is wasted. Pig-bins are in every street.' A woman crosses the road to put waste into a FOOD WASTE bin. We then see pigs eating.
Next title: Instruction in precautions against anti-personnel bombs.' An air-raid warden lays sand-bags outside in a garden or park, he wears a helmet with a large white 'W'. A large group of men in coats stand around.
Next title: 'Trailer pump competition'. We then cut to a shot of Queens Park(?) with the Clocktower in the background. There are piles of sandbags and men in wardens' uniforms, and policemen. We see St. Matthew's Church (Chichester Road) in the background as a pump is wheeled across. Two teams compete to unroll the hoses and spray water across the park and at targets. A man adjudicates with a clipboard.
Next title: 'Anti-gas training.' A very large group of people including lots of children, all wearing helmets, walks past slowly, led by wardens. Title reads: 'Will gas be used? That question like many others, remains unanswered in 1943 but whatever the future, Croydonians in common with all the peoples of the United Nations, look forward to the future with confidence and with one aim - victory in 1944!' Final shot is of the Union Jack blowing in the wind.
