Summary: Celebrations for the Croydon Millenary in 1960, including sports, a parade, pageants and a carnival.
Title number: 1179
LSA ID: LSA/1620
Description: Opening title is 'Addiscombe Millenary Celebrations'. Opening intertitle shows a cartoon of a Roman solider on a chariot with two horses, followed by the title 'Croydon 1000'. The next title reads 'Addiscombe Millenary Cleberations Saturday, May 28th, 1960'. The date presumably refers to an Anglo-Saxon will made in 960. A sign advertises the celebrations at Ashburton Park, admission free, with the various events taking place, including weight lifting, beauty demonstration, fencing, grand evening concert etc. The procession will go from the park via Shirely, Addiscombe, Cherry Orchard Lane, Addiscombe Road, to park. Next title reads 'Procession to Park' and we see a marching band followed by a heavily-decorated float, with Union Jack flags and a large number of young girls in white dresses. The next float is entirely covered in Union Jack flags, followed by a float for the British Legion, then an antique horse-drawn fire engine with fireman sat on top. In the background we see a car dealer called Manton Motors, on Dingwall Road. Next we see floats for St. John's Ambulance, and for Charcoal Burners, then the Cherry Fair Hovis, all on large 1950's lorries. A large cart is led by two dray horses loaded with barrels of beer (for Whitbread Brewery). A large model of the ark holds a red car on the back, with a shield on the front that reads 'Dove'. More carts follow in the processions, followed by a shot of a group of Scottish bagpipers, with two red London buses in the background. The same floats from earlier then go past down a residential street. A large group of women and young girls are all dressed in elaborate white and pink dresses; one girl carries a banner for the May Queen of Upper Norwood. The procession now enters the park, where a large number of spectators are milling around; children run after the antique fire engine.
A man in a dark suit wears a blue ribbon with a ceremonial badge of some sort. Another man, in a suit with glasses, presents a large bouquet to a small girl dressed as a fairy. An older woman, wearing a similar badge of office to the man before, holds the flowers and kisses the young girl. Another girl in a yellow tut curtsies to an older woman in a blue dress suit. Various men, all in suits, mill around and talk (presumably they are all local dignitaries). A procession of girls in white dresses with white hats and bonnets, some with large trains (May Queens from different parts of the borough) then files past. The costumes are varied and elaborate - many of the girls wear crowns, feathers, flowing pink capes and so on, and carry banners and bouquets of flowers.
An intertitle reads 'Tableaux & Pageant'. A man and a woman, dressed like traditional peasants, drags a bag across the grass as a large crowd watches. Some sort of play or performance ensues, also involving an older woman, a man dressed as a judge, and Kings and Queens in medieval and Tudor costumes. A large number of children, also in medieval costume, then enter the field in pairs as if joining a dance. A woman in a white bride's dress is then presented, and walks alongside a man dressed in black. Next we see a May Queen celebration with girls in wide flowery skirts dancing. Another play of some sort follows. The performance is meant to represent the people of the court paying their respects to the May Queen. A jester runs past followed by a large group of girls in yellow tutus, who perform a ballet. Another group of girls in blue skirts perform a dance.
The next title reads 'Ladies Fashion Parade'. A woman wears a short-sleeved yellow blouse with a large A-line skirt typical of the late 1950's, with yellow gloves. More women with similar costumes follow, inside a large marquee where a crowd watches.
Next title is 'Cycle Polo'. A dog digs a hole. Boys play polo on bicycles with surprising skill and speed.
Next title is 'Judo' - a large square mat is set up for a group of teenage boys in white judo costumes to fight and perform gymnastic movements to impress the large crowd. A dog tries to join in. Two boys fight with large wooden swords. They then fight with sticks(?).
Next title: 'Weight Lifting'. Young boys lift weights for the crowd, one wearing only a loincloth. A man in a suit judges. Some boys then wrestle (the crowd seems thinner than earlier and judging by the light it is later in the afternoon). A man in a tracksuit, presumably the tutor, wrestles with a younger boy who wears only underwear. A Chelsea pensioner looks into the camera and proudly displays the medals on his red jacket. A Scottish marching band with drums and bagpipes then performs for the crowd.
Next title: '960-1960 South Norwood and District Millenary Celebrations'. A milk truck with 'Portland Creameries' on the front is seen, with a giant milk bottle on top, as is the antique fire engine from earlier. A man in a striped suit and boater hat rides a tandem bike with a woman in Victorian dress. A van advertises some kind of bottled drink. We then see a float with sign 'Here's a friendly wave from the Croydon polios' - several people sit atop the float, a man dressed as a pirate, the women as mermaids (they wave to the camera). Next we see a group of unmanned Vesper scooters, followed by a band of drummers and the fire engine again, followed by a large green more modern fire engine. Next float is for the Norwood News with a maypole on top, then the scooters. The next truck has a model church on top with a bride standing on it, with the sign 'Happy the bride that uses gas', followed by the Portland Creameries float and the Wave float. Some horses and a vintage 1920's car follows. A huge float shaped like a boat is next, with a band sitting on top. More shots of the same floats.
Three women are now seen in a garden, with cardigans, handbags, hats and sunglasses all typical of late 50's fashions, carrying clipboards. We see a sign for the Rotary Club of South Norwood & Addiscombe. Inside a marquee, children stand on a stage in fancy dress - costumes include Little Bo Peep, a pirate, a harlequin, and a boy with a sign round his neck that reads 'What's My Line?' Next we see a funfair with swings and a carousel, with children having fun, followed by a shot of a sunset behind the trees.
Next title reads: Millenary Year 1960 - Summer Show - Election of Croydon Show Queen - Horse show jumping'. A man in a suit stands atop a stage at a microphone, with various local dignitaries behind him. Another man with a large ceremonial badge around his neck follows. A small girl in a white dress carries flowers up onto the stage. A women in a frilly white sleeveless broad A-line dresses and white gloves, with a blue belt, walks past a group of men who watch her. She then sits and joins a row of beautiful young women, all wearing white or patterned dresses, white heels, and with dark hair. They stand up in front of the judges and are numbered 1-6. Two women stand on either side of the winner's podium and are awarded 'Lady in Waiting' sashes. The first woman with the blue belt wins, and stands in the middle at the top of podium, where she is awarded a sash that reads 'Croydon Summer Show Queen', and a ceremonial cape. It then starts to rain and we see the three winning women standing together under an umbrella, posing for photos.
We then cut to a tug-of-war match between two teams of men in a park watched by a crowd, one wearing blue, the other yellow, possibly two rugby teams. A coach shouts at them and the blue team wins. We then see horses show-jumping, some more successfully than others. A London bus drives by outside the park in the background. We see the carousel behind the watching crowd. Various shots of the show-jumping continues as the light in the park begins to fade. A last shot shows the carousel at night, silhouetted against the lights behind it.
Next title: 'Trocarts and Parachuting - Croydon Millenary Celebration - Croydon Airport - 14-25 June 1960'. It is dusk and we see a large carnival set up, with a banner saying 'First it's a Trokart'. Children ride go-carts around a winding track with hay-bales set up around the edges. We then see a sign for 'Parachute Regiment'. Teenaged boys are strapped into a harness atop a high tower made of scaffholding, from which they are dropped on a rope down to the ground. They are followed by some girls in A-line skirts and high heels (the May Queens?) - their skirts billow up as they fall. An overexposed shot then shows a steam tractor and a steam roller in a field.
