Summary: Film of public events in Finchley.
Title number: 11
LSA ID: LSA/14
Description: The film begins with young people of Finchley gathering in formal groupings on some playing fields for a 'Rally of Youth'. The Mayor addresses the children from a raised stage before the events of the day commence. There is a group sing-a-long by the assembled children accompanied by an adult band. There follows a series of displays: formation dancing by a group of girls, girl guides showing their housework skills, a girls' netball match, some boys performing callisthenics, boys boxing matches, a boys' gymnastics display and a schoolgirl gymnastics display using bars. The next event is a 'Water Carnival' at the open-air baths of Finchley Lido. There are competition swimming races, a diving exhibition from high boards, a game of water polo and a strange sequence with people being released from a cage wearing papier-mache masks. There follows a record of a rugby match between the Finchley team and Wanderers. After this is a 'road walk', a competition walking event through Finchley passing trolleybuses and motor vehicles. Next is an evening pageant at Avenue House called 'The Stars' with a dance performance in the house grounds. Then it is off to a fun fair with people enjoying the merry go round, the helter skelter, swings and other rides. There is also a shot of a grumpy looking fortune-teller called 'Gipsy Nancy Lee'. At night all the rides are lit up with electric light. The film ends with the fair's fireworks display.
