Summary: A documentary on the role of the City of London.
Title number: 1092
LSA ID: LSA/18423
Description: The film begins at the Lord Mayor's show with the Mayoral carriage travelling through the City of London. At the Guildhall, there is a meeting of the Court of Common Council officiated by the Town Clerk. The documentary outlines the roles and responsibilities of the Common Councilmen and the Aldermen. The square mile of the city is seen bustling by day and quiet by night, with commuters streaming over London Bridge in the morning and a solitary street sweeper cleaning up in the evening. The film introduces some of aspects of the City of London's governance that might not be known by the wider public. It begins with the role of the Bridge House Estates committee, which has responsibility for four bridges over the Thames including London Bridge and Tower Bridge. It continues with a presentation of the post-war reconstruction plan in the City that saw bombed areas rebuilt with new office blocks and the development of housing. The established Golden Lane Housing Estate is shown and the plans for the Barbican redevelopment on the Cripplegate site are presented. The film then introduces the Epping Forest committee, and discusses the City of London's remit outside its geographic borders with the management of Epping Forest and Burnham Beeches. The distinction of the City of London police from the Metropolitan force across the rest of London is presented in its historical context. Then the City of London's educational remit is relayed with film of the pupils and facilities of The City of London School for Girls, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the City of London School for Boys. Isledon House for old people established on Prebend Street in the Borough of Islington under the authority of the City Of London, indicates something of its social considerations. The City's responsibilities through the Port of London Authority are presented by the sanitary inspections of its medical ship 'The Hygeia'. That lighter is filmed approaching an incoming foreign ship in the Thames, with its medical officer boarding to ensure infectious diseases do no enter London. Public health of another kind, meanwhile, is managed through the inspection of food imports entering London by ships and trains to be sold at the markets of Smithfield, Billingsgate, and Spitalfields.
