The Kanvey Kids 1971
Standard 8mm film Colour Silent 1971 12:01
Summary: 1971 amateur film of the annual summer day trip to Canvey Island by the residents of the Brandon Estate, Southwark.
Title number: 1082
LSA ID: LSA/1500
Description: Title card (TC): The Kanvey Kids
TC: or wot no tea Jim!
(00:10) Residents gather by a coach. Shot of a little boy looking right at the camera. A man stands in front of a building which appears to be very near or part of the estate that has a sign on it reading The Canterbury Arms. Two other men load up the coach with boxes of supplies for the trip. Another shot of residents waiting by the coach, a group of women with large hairdos and a young girl.
(00:35) We see a series of close-ups of children as they look out of the coach windows. Some wave while others just smile.
(00:49) Adult residents wait outside the coach (some of whom are perhaps staying behind). We see a group of sharply dressed men in suits.
(00:58) The camera films from the window of one of the coaches as it drives away, while residents who are staying behind wave goodbye. There is a close-up of the driver who smiles at the camera. The camera films the road ahead out the front of the coach. We then see inside the coach carrying mostly (excited) children and a few women adults. There is a shot of the coach behind filmed from the back window.
(01:57) A young boy holds up a copy of 'Shoot', a football magazine, to the camera. The front cover reads 'Manchester United's Stars in Full Colour' and 'Special Christmas Features'. Another young boy holds up a full page poster of one of these football stars to the camera. There is a very close close-up of a young girl with pigtails. We see other children laughing behind her, before the camera cuts closer to focus on her eyes. This young girl seems to point off camera, and it is edited as if she is pointing to a road sign to Canvey.
(02:09) We see a woman with a baby sitting on her lap who is wearing a knitted bonnet. From the street we see several shots of the coaches arriving at their destination.
Intertitle: Down at Canvey (the letters of the word 'down' are playfully arranged so that they go down the intertitle).
We see the residents disembark the coaches and set out in Canvey Island. A group gather outside of a building with a sign reading 'Amusements' and 'Restaurant and Snack Bar'. Among this group, there is a little girl in the foreground mucking around and dancing. We see a panning close-up shot of the crowd.
(03:39) At the funfair, we see children residents on a variety of rides including a carousel, a boat ride and dodgems.
(04:45) A young boy with a toy bow and arrow aimed at the camera runs towards it. We then see children paying for a ride on the helter skelter. One boy goes down head first it on his front! We see other children going down (the conventional way) one by one.
Now the camera person appears to be about to go down the helter skelter himself and turns backwards to show that there are three adult women behind him. We then see a point of view shot of the camera person going down the ride with a young boy in front of him. We then see the camera person, still holding the camera, reach the bottom with his companions (a nice bit of visual evidence that there were at least two filmmakers documenting the day - Richard Morgan and Brian Waterman).
(05:57) We see children riding on mechanical horses. Then, we see the residents waiting for real pony rides. We see a sign reading 'Pony Rides - Good Value - Great Fun for the Kids'. Shots of horses and children riding them.
(07:30) Back at the funfair we see more residents on rides and enjoying the park. We see a rollercoaster called 'Wild Mouse'. Residents get on the ride. There is then a point of view shot as it sets off along the track.
(08:34) We see an area of the funfair meant for very young children called 'Kiddies Corner'. Children ride on various gentle rides. We then see a trampoline park where some children, but mostly adults, bounce around. Lots of laughing!
(11:10) We see a group of children on the beach with their heads to the ground, searching among the rocks. Residents gather their things and prepare to head back to the coach. The final shot of the film is of two young boys, one holding a candy floss that almost entirely obscures his head!
Intertitle: The End

Further information: The Brandon Estate was built in 1958 and housed people from Bermondsey whose houses had been demolished in slum clearance. The residents formed several clubs, and the cine club filmed events run by the social club, which met above the library. Filmmaker Brian Waterman joined the cine club age 17 and bought his camera with his first pay packet (he worked for London Underground).
