Film London Lodestars 2023
Film London Lodestars honours the bright futures of innovative filmmakers, creatives and craftspeople from across the capital each year. Our Lodestars are selected each year from hundreds of people and organisations spanning the varied initiatives of Film London and Games London, including filmmakers, heads of department, craftspeople, performers, programmers, exhibitors, archives, and games creators who have worked with the capital’s screen agency over the previous three years.
In the London’s Screen Archives (LSA) category, we celebrate our LSA partners and their extraordinary moving image collections shared each Thursday via the LSA Film of the Week on Twitter @film_london.
We selected 6 films from the Film of the Week over the past year and asked the public to vote for their favourite film. In 2023, the public chose Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives: Land of Arguments as the Lodestar.
In the words of the Archive, "we’re delighted that a film from our collection has been nominated as a Film London Lodestar. ‘Land of Arguments’ is a drama-documentary conceived, shot, and edited by a group of girls from Poplar in 1982. It explores the complex topic of ‘arguments’ and how they arise from a young person’s perspective. Like much of our film and video collection, it was the product of a Tower Hamlets Arts Council workshop, and remained largely forgotten about for almost four decades before being digitised by Film London. With the passage of time, its unpolished mix of authentic East End street life and a tough but charming young cast make for an engaging watch, and we can’t wait to share more gems from our collection in the future."
The six films nominated films were:
Brent Museum and Archive: Irish In Brent
Lambeth Archives: Coping with AIDS
Wellcome Collection: Posture
Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives: Land of Arguments
London Metropolitan Archives: Looking After Londoners
Newham Archives and Local Studies Library: Christmas in Newham
